As the year draws to a close, many of us feel the urge to wrap up as much as possible before the holiday season. But while the “finish by December 31” mindset might increase a sense of urgency, it’s also a great time to pause, reassess, and focus on what truly matters.

This month, instead of pushing into overdrive, consider creating margin and letting go of self-imposed deadlines that may not serve your priorities. Let’s approach the final stretch of 2024 with clarity and purpose.

Consider Where You’ve Extended Your Reach

As the year-end approaches, it’s natural to look at where we might have overreached. If you’re feeling weighed down by your commitments, consider this question: “Am I holding onto the right things?”

It’s impossible to finish every task, but by focusing on the essentials, you can close out the year with a sense of accomplishment and readiness for what’s next.

When you're honest about what's really on your list — including those tasks taking up mental and emotional energy — it becomes easier to let go of what's less essential and lighten your overall load.

For Leaders

As a leader, your team looks to you for guidance on what’s feasible. This is a time to clarify what can realistically be achieved before the end of the year, helping your team align their efforts with what truly matters. By making it clear what to focus on — and what to let go of — you can prevent the “Dunkirk Spirit” from tipping into burnout. Prioritizing well-being over non-stop hustle will help everyone close out 2024 strong and steady.

For Good Teammates

It’s a season where everyone is balancing personal and professional demands. Consider what you and your team might need to subtract to close the year not just successfully but also in good spirits. Small acts of support can make a big difference, especially during this hectic time — a reminder that everyone is carrying something, and kindness and flexibility go a long way.
