Build Better Systems to Build A Better Business
As I've recently shared in my latest book (The Small Business Lifecycle), the way to build a better business in Stage 3 is to focus on four things: your people, processes, systems, and positioning. Businesses are normally founded by smart, passionate people who often try to build their business around people of their talent level.
The problem, as Peter Drucker once said, is that
No institution can possibly survive if it needs geniuses or supermen to manage it. It must be organized in such a way as to be able to get along under a leadership composed of average human beings.
Small business owners, listen up! Just because you may not normally think about yourself as the CEO - and, thus, that information written for CEOs doesn't apply to you - doesn't make it true. Until you hire someone else to do the job, you're the CEO of your own business.
Sure, you may not want to scale, but building a strong, process-driven business means that you get to do the things you want to do in your business, not that you have to do those things. The subtle distinction between get to and have to makes a huge difference.
