Getting Hijacked by Kids and Jammin' with Johnny
There's been a lot going on around here lately. I've been spending a lot of time creating a few things, and between helping clients, creating stuff, and working through the big Guard transition, I've dropped the ball on writing posts. And, as much as I enjoy blogging, there's only so much time in a day.
One big ball that I've dropped is letting you know about some of the conversations I've been having - I'd like to share those with you today.
Getting Hijacked By a 10-year Old Kid with Steve Spalding
The first conversation is the one I had with the brilliant Steve Spalding from How to Split an Atom. We jumped on the phone and talked about taking control of your email, prioritization, learning to evolve before it’s too late, skill versus process based training, the economics of creativity and how we’re both quickly working our way out of jobs - yes, that's the same description Steve gave. No need to recreate the wheel...
What wasn't included on this cut was us getting hijacked by a 10-year old who wanted us to check out his YouTube profile - I'm not kidding. I'm sure we would have included it had we been recording at that time, but, sadly, he jumped in after we turned recording off. Steve and I spent fifteen minutes trying to see just how far this kid would try to bait us, knowing full well that we were being baited.
Which made us wonder: that kid was 10 and he is already sophisticated enough to jump on a conference call, hoax two speakers, and then send them to his YouTube videos that he had filmed and edited. In other words, he had more technological savvy than about 90% of people who are me and Steve's age. At that age, I was proud to be beating Super Mario Brothers on the Nintendo...what a brave new world, indeed.
Jamming With Johnny (B. Truant)
Johnny and I have been hanging out in the same circles for a while, but, for one reason or the other, we'd never actually spoken to each other. One day he called me out on Twitter about it, so we jumped on Skype and started talking. It was like two musicians met and grooved with each other, except for the fact that neither one of us were playing instruments; in other words, we just wouldn't shut up. It was only after we'd jammed for a while that we figured out that we should have recorded our conversation.
We decided to get together for another jam session, and this time the groove was about what it really takes to start an online business. What you'll want to listen for, though, is our discussion about how different sticking with it is than starting it. While you can start an online business for the whopping cost of $0, you can't grow your business without the right types of investments.
We've both received some good feedback about the call, but if you'd like to hear more, make sure you let us know. And, seriously, would you do it in public, as in on our blogs with a comment? We're both starting to feel a bit like mopeds here.
