The end of the year is always ripe with reflection, and this one is no different. As we approach the two year mark of our lives being completely flipped upside down, this year was remarkable in its own right. The highs and lows of the state of the world – plus, of course, the nuances of our lives in general – can make it easy to skip the whole looking-back-and-learning part.
Because sometimes, you don’t want to look back. Sometimes it’s easier, nicer, more safe and more comfortable to only look forward.
Charlie recently wrote about how there’s no shortage of smart people in the world, but rather there’s a shortage of brave, courageous people. So while it can be challenging to look back on your year, is it possible to change your perspective? To honor your achievements and to look at all the times you were brave, bold, and daring (even in your missteps) in an effort to move forward into 2022 with more confidence and optimism?
Here are some ways that you can take baby steps into bringing bravery into your work:
- Be honest with yourself about what it is you want, no matter how unrealistic it may sound. Give yourself permission to dream. Look at all the ways you might be more qualified than you give yourself credit for. Know that you deserve it.
- Make a move towards a project that’s always sparked joy in your heart, but that maybe you’ve been too fearful to take on. For example, if you want to learn a new skill, start by looking up some free YouTube tutorials to dip your toe in. You don’t need to sign up for a whole program (and spend the money doing it) to see if it’s a project you want to take on.
- Tell someone about it! Yes, it’s scary, but your true supporters will hold you accountable and be on the sidelines with you along the way. Plus, you might just encourage someone else to also take a brave new step.
