@ Duff: Seeing Lakoff would be cool, and Cognitive Linguistics is definitely cool. Phil Language is one of those weird fields in which you do a lot of fascinating metathinking to the point in which you wonder which level of thinking you're thinking about.

Looking forward to our dialogue!

Wow, great article, Charles.

I recently saw Lakoff speak, and I've been fascinated by Cognitive Linguistics (how we think and create meaning in words) since studying Philosophy of Language in college.

I'd love to dialogue more about what metaphorical concepts would be more appropriate to productivity, goals, awakened doing, mindful action, etc.

[...] Part of life is knowing how to recover from stupid mistakes, but another, even more important part, is figuring out how to avoid them in the first place. Scott’s insightful post helps with the latter aspect. My favorite: “Metaphors are your intellectual weapons to prevent mistakes.” And I’ve made it known how I feel about metaphors. [...]

[...] We can, and often do, attach different thoughts, ideas, and emotions and transfer them onto words. Most of the words used in the personal development arena - happiness, productivity, success, and, yes, even flourishing - intertwine different thoughts, ideas, and emotions. This can be both good and bad. It’s bad, for example, when we understand productivity to be externally oriented - as I mentioned the other day, productivity is not about things.
@ Clay: We've been having somewhat of a dialogue between our two blogs and the two posts were right on point with what I was talking about. They were also the best posts I've read on visualizing goals in a bit, to boot.

My current brainstew has a lot to do with the follow through of goals. We'll see if it helps. Thanks for dropping by!

I liked what you said about getting things done. I think a better phrase would be "getting goals done." There's a lot of focus on goal setting, which is important, but there's less on the follow up.

By the way, I'm honored that such a great blogger as yourself would link to me twice in one article, by the way.
