One of the posts I hope to get out this week will answer this from the perspective of how much text you actually get per screen on normal reading levels. The short answer, though, is to remember that reading on a e-ink screen is a lot different than reading on an LCD display. If you're reading on the go, this set up might work well for you, but if you were reading longer than 30 minutes, you'd probably get frustrated with reading on that small of a screen.

If, indeed, the experience of reading on the K2 screen is not much different than reading the book on the iPhone, then would you think buying an iTouch (which I have been thinking of doing) would be a good option, since they have a Kindle app for iTouch

The DX isn't substantially heavier than the K2 - and I particularly like the weightiness of it. It feels more like a book to me.

I'm also really excited about the nook being on the market as it produces legitimate competition that's already made Amazon respond. It also buttresses the worry that Amazon would have too much power and could dictate terms to publishers, much like Wal-Mart does with vendors.

I did - and I'll cover this soon. Essentially, it came down to availability of books, ease of purchasing, and DRM issues.

Thanks, Duff - and you're probably right. There would be a lot of money made if they'd give the Kindle away for free and charge $3 extra per book. Think about it.

Me, too. And there's the clincher: reading on a Kindle is very different than reading on the computer. It's much closer to reading a book.

Yes and no, and I'll cover this soon. Essentially, the books you buy from Amazon have Digital Rights Management on them, so you can't read them on other e-readers.

You can, however, read them on Kindle for PC and Kindle for Mac (in development).

This is one of the restrictions that get most people, myself included. For what it's worth, the publishers are making this restriction as much, if not more, than Amazon or B&N are.

What i would be interested in knowing is. Are the books you download entirely confined to reading on the kindle? I mean if I download and buy a pdf I want to be able to read it on my computer without the use of any amazon software. I don't like restrictions placed on what I have bought.

But what about the new book smell..? (or is it just me who sniffs books?)

Thanks for this, Charlie, I've always been a bit unsure about the e-reader idea (because I'm a fast reader, and because I really like the physicality of books). I'm hoping to do a bit of travelling next summer -- and possibly a LOT of travelling in the medium-term future -- so while I won't be rushing out and buying a Kindle DX just yet, it's now very much on my radar!
