When something adds value, it replaces something of lesser value. If it fails this test, it just creates overhead. Some questions to ask before implementing a methodology or tip:

What problem is a system solving?
What gets eliminated with its adoption?
What are the underlying principles that inform the practice?
How long am I willing to try this before reevaluating its net benefit?

Experiment liberally, adopt conservatively.
