Charlie, thanks for sharing. That pattern is unfortunately far too familiar. Even though the knowledge is there, it's so easy to let the execution slip. At least you got back on track without losing the whole day. Now I just need to quit over-perfecting that new file server... :P

Interesting, I am also trying to change my wake schedule.. !
Abt the basecamp plan, have you tried DeskAway's basic plan which is free? that might be a good option. (www.deskaway.com) and I do work for them so I know it works for many people...
I also faced the two gmail accounts problem, cause I couldnt log into gtalk with both, so finally found an answer in Pidgin, it lets me stay logged on with both my accounts simultaneously.

"I often wish I could hire myself to implement my own advice."

Same here!

Charlie, I've had days exactly like that, where I get All Caught Up in some idea and spend hours chasing my tail, only to realize that I haven't gotten anywhere. I think the motorcycle ride was key to breaking your vortex of tail-chasing; it's so easy to get sucked into something online, and it helps tremendously to take a break and go outside.

Great post! Can't wait to read Episode 2!

excellent. well, excellent to know that others do the same thing. I really need to turn off the notifications thing in tweetdeck because it's fine to have running behind what I'm doing but having those little windows pop up to tell me there is a new tweet is totally distracting.

actually, for me, the whole set-up time and trouble is mostly what keeps me from switching to new applications. I just want to use the damned thing. though I started using iCal the other day because I figured out freeconference.com would download scheduled conference calls right into it.
